Polo Mallet — Traditional Cane Construction

The polo mallet is the player's primary tool — an extension of their arm, their skill, and their instinct. This mallet is crafted from natural cane, the material of choice for polo players worldwide, prized for its unique combination of flexibility, strength, and feel that no synthetic material has ever fully replicated.

How the Mallet is Used in Polo

The mallet is used to strike the polo ball while riding at full gallop. Players swing it in a pendulum motion, making contact with the ball using the cylindrical mallet head. The cane shaft flexes slightly on impact, transferring energy efficiently into the shot while absorbing shock back into the player's grip. Shots are played in four directions — the offside forehand, offside backhand, nearside forehand, and nearside backhand — requiring the player to control swing, angle, and power simultaneously while managing their horse.

• Offside shots — played on the right side of the horse, the most natural and powerful swing direction
• Nearside shots — played on the left side, requiring greater technique and body rotation
• Neck shots — struck directly under the horse's neck to change the ball's direction quickly
• Tail shots — played behind the horse to redirect the ball while riding away

Why Cane?

Choose your length based on your horse's height and your personal swing preference. When in doubt, err slightly longer — you can always choke up on the grip, but you can't extend a shaft that's too short.
